The Xia was the first Dynasty,

Was it fact or fantasy?

The first king, his name was Yu,

We still don’t know if it was true,

Kings and peasants worked together,

To help make parts of China better,

Legend says, they built canals,

Things were good, so all was well.

The Shang were the next Dynasty,

Social order was the key,

Kings and nobles were on top,

Peasants, farmers and slaves were not,

They learned to write and then foretold,

Their future using oracle bones,

Tools and weapons from bronze were made,

Ornaments were made from jade.

The Zhou was the third dynasty,

They were big on loyalty,

Kings gave friends some property,

But families fought and got greedy,

Times went bad, and wars were fought,

Confucius and Laozi had thoughts,

But no one in the government,

Would listen to their arguments.

Presenting the Qin dynasty,

China was united by Shi Huangdi,

He built roads and walls on  his terrain

He made clay warriors and made money the same

Legalism was his philosophy,

So he was known for his cruelty,

It’s true that China was unified,

But mostly they were terrified.

The Han was the next Dynasty,

Liu Bang and Wudi brought civility,

Confucius’ ways were finally respected,

Families were honored, education expected,

Art and science became advanced,

Schools and learning were enhanced,

Silk and poems and paper were made,

And thus began the Silk Road trade.
